Colorado and our nation in general is facing a high risk insurance crisis. Insurance works because individual risk is spread out and shared across large areas. Currently the underwriters at the major insurance carriers are re-evaluating their policy portfolios and removing higher risk properties in an effort to keep the prices down for the remaining policy holders. This becomes a problem when the majority of the major carriers are seeing the same data and making the same decisions with their non renewal parameters. What we are left with is areas that cannot be insured with Major Admitted carriers.

Here in Colorado we are dealing with a few specific risks that are contributing to this problem.  The dry arid climate leads to wildfire risk. In addition we have a season recently where large damaging hail has become a problem.
